Teaching Agriculture in Classrooms –
To all 42 public schools in Las Piñas City, Philippines

Leading her to institute “OH MY GULAY: Grow Your Own Food Contest,” which was created as an urgent response to COVID-19 to fight against the food security threat brought about by the pandemic. Distributing thousands of free vegetable planting kits and providing in-depth planting workshops to all Las Piñas City public schools, allowing them to empower students to become part of the solution by growing their own food at home.

This initiative encouraged students to become primary food producers for their households, regardless of age, while also promoting the Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger & Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Later, the project scaled internationally, expanding to four countries: Indonesia, Laos, and Thailand, thanks to partnerships with the U.S. Embassy, the Youth Southeast Asian Leadership Initiative (YSEALI), and the University of Montana Maureen & Mike Mansfield Center.

Classrooms to FarmlandsGrow School: First Sustainable Farm School Structure at Nasugbu, Batangas

Building on this success and partnership, she later founded Grow School Philippines, the first bamboo farm school located at Nasugbu, Batangas, which provides free, accessible environmental and agricultural programs to public schools across the Philippines.

Symbolizing our native traditional Filipino farmer’s hat, the “Salakot,” Grow School was constructed entirely from sustainable bamboo and was built by a group of local Filipino corn farmers trained in green architecture and sustainable structures. Completely powered by renewable solar energy, the school serves as a hub for practical training and introduces public school students to amazing local farmers and other successful individuals in agriculture.

Through Grow School, these individuals share their stories, experiences, and deep passion for the art and science of cultivating soil and crops, inspiring the next generation of Filipino agricultural leaders.
